Researchers must pay far more attention to discovering and validating the principles that underlie software maintenance and evolution. This was one of the major conclusions reached during the International Workshop on Empirical Studies of Software Maintenance. This workshop, held in November 1996 in Monterey, California, brought together an international group of researchers to discuss the successes, challenges and open issues in software maintenance and evolution. This article documents the discussion of the subgroup on fundamental laws and assumptions of software maintenance. The participants of this group included researchers in software engineering, the behavioral sciences, information systems and statistics. Their main conclusion was that insufficient effort has been paid to synthesizing research conjectures into validated theories and that this problem has slowed progress in software maintenance. To help support this vision they identified the following supporting conclusions. (1) need to develop a genuine scientific approach—more than just using empirical methods, (2) other disciplines can help, (3) need to explore a wider range of approaches to empirical studies, (4) need to study both evolution and maintenance. Grey System Theory is used to study the relationship between the change of compositions of the aged asphalt and the change of its service performance, such as softening point, penetration, and viscosity. The results show that the increase of the asphaltene content and the collapse of the colloidal stability are the main reasons why the service performances of the aged paving asphalt deteriorate. In this paper, the mathematical method is first introduced to the study on the relationship between the change of compositions of the aged paving asphalt and the change of its service performance. The result from Grey System Theory is in accordance with that from the experiential analysis.  相似文献

In this paper we explore the topic of the consolidation of information in neural network learning. One problem in particular has limited the ability of a broad range of neural networks to perform ongoing learning and consolidation. This is 'catastrophic forgetting', the tendency for new information, when it is learned, to disrupt old information. We will review and slightly extend the rehearsal and pseudorehearsal solutions to the catastrophic forgetting problem presented in Robins (1995). The main focus of this paper is to then relate these mechanisms to the consolidation processes which have been proposed in the psychological literature regarding sleep. We suggest that the catastrophic forgetting problem in artificial neural networks (ANNs) is a problem that has actually occurred in the evolution of the mammalian brain, and that the pseudorehearsal solution to the problem in ANNs is functionally equivalent to the sleep consolidation solution adopted by the brain. Finally, we review related work by McClelland et al. (1995) and propose a tentative model of learning and sleep that emphasizes consolidation mechanisms and the role of the hippocampus.  相似文献

Sonluminescence can be explained by treating the bubbles as IRasers with standing waves in resonance with the bubble dimensions.Since the IRaser resonant radiation is required to satisfy wave boundary conditions,the water molecules lining the bubble walls undergo a continuous population inversion conditions,the water molecules lining the bubble walls undergo a continuous population inversion as the bubble collapses.By stimulated processes,the Planck energy accumulates as the KbT energy of radiation photons is pumped from the surroundings through the rotational state of the water molecule.Bubble collapse occurs almost isothermally with the high IR absorptivity of the water molecule permitting the Planck energy to accumulate to 2-6eV only to be released by VIS-UV photon emission because of the low absorptivity of water at VIS-UV frequencies.As the IRaser cavity dimensions collapse to the spacing between water molecules at liquid density,soft X-rays at about 2keV are predicted.But,this is less than 10keV necessary for cold fusion so that no neutrons is directly expected yet.Therefore,it is suggested that UV laser enhancement is used to accumulate further bubble collapse energy.  相似文献

Reviews the book, Managing the unknowable: Strategic boundaries between order and chaos in organizations by Ralph D. Stacey (1992). This book should have a prominent label on the cover Warning, reading this book can be hazardous to all the sacred beliefs that you have about organizations as systems; organizational development, effectiveness and growth; and learning and innovation in organizations. While Stacey draws upon the work of other more mainstream systems theorists such as Senge (1990, reviewed in CPJ, Fall 1993), Miller (1990), and Hamel and Prahalad (1989), he extends General Systems Theory (GST) (von Bertalanffy, 1950; Berrien, K. 1968) in new exciting and icon-breaking directions. Senge's extension of system's thinking is mostly evolutionary, granted, elegantly evolutionary, but not a radical break from the sort of systems theory that forms the backbone of organizational development and most of organization consultation theory. This is not to say that Stacey's aim is to attack or invalidate more traditional system's theory. The theories of Einstein and Quantum Physics, were not introduced to attack or diminish the brilliance and usefulness of Newtonian theories of physics. These theories, after all, proved quite useful and valid in many conditions conditions that approximated closed energy systems. When these closed energy models proved inadequate or too error-prone to be useful, newer theories were developed that either extended or superseded the older, now less useful, theories.
